Math Projects

Here are some projects that I enjoy using in my classroom.  I have attached rubrics and guides for each as well.  Hope you enjoy them!

Roller Coaster Project

This project requires students to use POV (Point of View) videos to build a graph of height vs. time.  Then they will construct a model of the roller coaster using their graph and any notes they have made from the video.  You will need to find POV videos to use for this.  I suggest muting the sound on the videos.  To use the presentation I have created, you will need to download all files into a folder and then open the pptview.exe file.

Proportion Project

This project requires students to use their height and a picture from a video game to construct a life-size object from the game.  The final product must be proportional to their height.  I found that it worked best if I brought in pictures for them to choose from.  This kept things appropriate for the school climate.  I always hang the products in the hall.  They really enjoy seeing their items in the hall on display and it made the walk down the hall interesting.

Party Planning Project

This project requires student groups to use their knowledge of rational numbers to plan a party on a budget.  You will need sales papers from various stores (I used three stores in town) for each group to plan with.  Students are expected to use their plan to create an itemized list and flyer for their party.  This project was derived from Todd Nesloney's party project.

Backyard Paradise Project

This project requires student groups to use their knowledge of rational numbers and measurement to plan a backyard renovation on a budget.  You will need sales papers from home improvement stores (I used Home Depot) for each group to plan with.  Groups were allowed to use pictures from the ad to supplement their blueprint.  Students are expected to use their plan to create an itemized list and detailed blueprint.  After the planning is complete, groups will present their ideas for the renovation while trying to be the group that is chosen for the project.  This project really brings out the true genius of students and teaches them to be savy when trying to please consumers.
